pregstimate v. [Fr. pregnancy + estimate]: To question a woman’s due date or size after she tells you how far along she is in her pregnancy. It usually starts innocently enough. “Oh, congratulations. You look terrific. When are you due?” You answer. Pause. “Wow. Really? October? You look much further along.” Or, the lesser occurring but just as irritating, “Wow. Really? October? You don’t look big enough.” The worst scenario is being asked if you’re expecting twins when you’ve already said that you were not. The best way to avoid pregstimations? The next time someone congratulates you and asks when you are due, just stare at them blankly and say you’re not sure what they mean.
